Important Tom Bergin’s Hearing Scheduled for May 21, 2019
City Council’s Planning and Land Use
Committee to Take Bergin’s Landmark
Nomination Under Consideration
On May 21, 2019 the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee of the Los Angeles City Council will hold a public hearing to consider the recommendation from the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission to approve Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) status for Tom Bergin’s Bar and Restaurant. [PLUM Committee Hearing Notice.]
The PLUM Committee will decide whether or not to send Bergin’s HCM nomination to the full City Council for final approval. On March 7, 2019 the Cultural Heritage Commission recommended Bergin’s for landmark status by a unanimous vote. The PLUM Committee will take public testimony, so it is crucial that Bergin’s supporters turnout in force.
Councilmember David Ryu’s endorsement of HCM designation for Bergin’s and the unanimous recommendation from the Cultural Heritage Commission bodes well for securing the support of the PLUM Committee, but opponents of Bergin’s will be making their arguments to deny landmark status.
The City Council traditionally defers to the recommendations of the PLUM Committee and the local councilmember when voting to approve Historic-Cultural Monuments. This hearing is the last major hurdle to clear to preserve Tom Bergin’s as a Los Angeles landmark.
